Step back in time and be part of history at El Paso’s exclusive Desert Mountains “Ordinary” Bicycle Race, where Victorian elegance meets modern-day action.
This unique criterium race brings together cycling enthusiasts, history lovers, and spectators for an unforgettable display of skill and high-wheel excitement. Riders from around the world travel to El Paso to compete on antique-style bicycles known as “penny farthings” in the United Kingdom and “ordinary” bicycles in the United States.
Past participants have traveled from the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, Kansas, Maryland, and Washington to experience this colorful, family-friendly event in the heart of downtown El Paso.
The Desert Mountains “Ordinary” Bicycle Race is a criterium race conducted on antique-style, high-wheel bicycles.
The race consists of:
Two 20-minute qualifying heats
One 30-minute championship race
The course takes place on a one-city-block circuit adjacent to San Jacinto Plaza in the heart of downtown El Paso.
Participants are encouraged to display good sportsmanship and interact with spectators throughout the event.

Little Riders Pedal Party
Children are invited to participate in a free intermission ride between 10:00 and 10:45 a.m.
Young riders will have the opportunity to complete one lap around the official race course at San Jacinto Plaza.
